DBT Skills Training Groups

Learn practical skills to manage emotions, navigate relationships and handle distress more effectively.

What Are DBT Skills Training Groups?

DBT Skills Training Groups are structured, educational group sessions that teach practical tools for managing emotions and behaviours.

They are not traditional group therapy. Instead, they focus on learning and practising specific skills that can be applied immediately in everyday life.

What You'll Learn

DBT skills groups follow a structured curriculum across four core modules:

Mindfulness: Learn how to stay present and aware, rather than overwhelmed or reactive.

Distress tolerance: Develop strategies to get through intense situations without making things worse.

Emotion regulation: Understand emotions and build skills to manage them more effectively.

Interpersonal effectiveness: Learn how to set boundaries, communicate clearly and maintain relationships.

How Groups Work

Consistency is key to building lasting change.

  • Weekly group sessions
  • Structured, skills-based format
  • Facilitated by trained DBT clinicians
  • Opportunities for discussion and practice
  • Homework and skill application between sessions

Standalone Groups vs Comprehensive DBT

DBT skills groups can be accessed in two ways:

As part of a comprehensive DBT program: participants attend both individual DBT therapy and skills training group, plus phone coaching and clinician consultation.

As a standalone skills group: in some cases, participants may attend skills groups without full DBT.

Suitability is assessed during intake.
