Professional Supervision

Life Mental Health staff have experience supervising students, colleagues and also workers from a range of different agencies and disciplines. Supervision is central to; maintaining resilience, professional development and best practice.

The opportunity

Professional supervision offers the opportunity for an employee and a supervisor to critically reflect on their practice focusing on their interactions within their organisation and also with their client base. Supervision has an educative and supportive function. It allows practitioners to debrief, reflect on positive and challenging experiences within the workplace and raise professional issues.

Educative function

The educative function of supervision encourages practitioners to explore their own professional development through research, training and reflection. Professional supervision is also important for monitoring the wellbeing of the supervised and provides a supportive environment that allows people to manage burnout or stress within the workplace.

Focus

Life Mental Health’s supervisory services focus on encouraging workers to develop their own professional practice framework. A practice framework is a toolkit that informs practice and is made up of theories, practice skills, beliefs, values and frameworks used by the worker that make up their professional identity.

Framework

Practice frameworks also encapsulate the organisational context of the worker and supervision allows the worker to reflect about their practice within the context of their current role. Supervision helps workers to articulate their practice framework and continue to develop it throughout their career.

The benefits of Supervision

The benefits of professional supervision are seen when workers regularly engage in supervisory processes, Life Mental Health staff recommends monthly or bi-monthly supervision.
